"As Students Start Shopping for Back-to-School, Denim Rules" So far, retail analysts say, soaring gas prices are not putting much of a dent in back-to-school sales.
Although August sales data is not in yet, the analysts expect sales to exceed last year's, although they disagreed in their estimates of how much greater they will be. What they did agree on was that students of all ages were stocking up on denim - jeans, mostly, but also jackets and skirts in dozens of washes, often with colorful designs sewn on.
They added that college students, who account for more than half of the multibillion-dollar sales for back-to-school season, will help bolster revenue with the purchases of computers, MP3 players and televisions, along with furniture and linens to decorate their dorm rooms and apartments.
The National Retail Federation, the industry's trade association, offered the most optimistic forecast, saying that sales will be 18 percent greater than last year, driven by the back-to-college sales.
